Masada

Masada is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Israel.  Built by King Herod thousands of years ago, it was taken over by Jewish rebels fighting the Roman Army, who surrounded it and eventually broke through, leaving the Jews to choose death over slavery.  Those who are more inclined to take the challenge, can hike the trail, which usually takes 45-60 minutes each way – depending on your walking speed.  You’ll see the ruins and learn the history through your trek.  Alternatively, you can take the cable car from the bottom to the top in only about 3 minutes. Bring plenty of water as it can get very hot and dry. Masada is about an hour and a half drive from Jerusalem.
